The Keys

”The blue of Key West’s waters is more than just a color, it’s a feeling.’ ~ Unknown

We made our way down through The Keys with Radio Margaritaville playing the tropical refrains of Jimmy Buffet as he sings about Boat Drinks, that One Particular Harbour, and being the Oldest Surfer On The Beach.

Rumor has it that the Seven Mile Bridge that connects some of the Keys is long enough that the engineers had to factor in the circumference of the Earth when designing the bridge. Also, Jimmy Buffet said he wrote the song “Margaritaville” while sitting in a three hour traffic jam on this bridge.

We settled in at a KOA resort on Sugarloaf Key that was fabulous! They had sites that felt secluded, brand-new laundry machines, boat rentals, a store, a cafe and a full bar with live music, a beach, a hot tub and a warm, sparkling pool! We wanted to stay all Winter but that wouldn’t satisfy our wanderlust.

The next two days we spent wandering around Key West, finally getting the opportunity to play tourist.

Key West is known for its not-so-wild life. They hang out in the patio restaurants looking for hand outs.

We ate at the Blue Heaven restaurant. The Lobster Benedict with avocado was de-lish and the live entertainment was good too…especially the lazy dog.

We planned to go to Sloppy Joe’s also, at least for a piece of their famous Key Lime pie, but it was just a little too noisy and too crowded in there.

A few days before we started this epic journey we had to say goodbye to our elderly feline family member, Jewels. We have her cremated remains with us and scattered some into the ocean at Key West.

After a week of fun and relaxation in The Keys we will head northwest as we begin our westward migration.

I hope you get the chance to feel the color of the bluest ocean.

The gam continues…
