Tombstone

“Tell ‘em the law is coming. You tell ‘em I’m coming, and Hell’s coming with me!” ~ Wyatt Earp

After escaping from Texas we stopped and stayed at a very nice KOA in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The campsite was brand new after some renovations. Loved the new fire ring and we had an excellent pizza from Valley Pizza.

The next day we landed in Benson, Arizona at another KOA. We were there because I have always wanted to visit the nearby history-ladened town of Tombstone, Arizona. I’ve driven by there a half dozen times before but couldn’t stop because we had Kodi with us and it was always over one hundred sizzling degrees.

On this day, however, it was cool enough that we had to wear layers to combat the chilly desert air. We drove an hour south of Benson to our first stop, the famous Boot Hill Graveyard…

As you can see by all of the epitaphs on the grave markers, the 1880’s Wild West was not for the faint-of-heart.

After Boot Hill we dodged a few tumbleweeds and moseyed on into the town of Tombstone to see what there was to see…

We rambled around town for a spell before stoppin’ in to check out a Wild West show that was kind of a mix between The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly meets The Three Stooges. They had a gunfight at the Not-So-O.K. Corral. It was corny, but entertaining; plus they had a bar…

“That one there! That’s Billy the Kid!”

I’m a big fan of Westerns. They don’t make enough good Western movies anymore. The movie “Tombstone” is one of the better ones, mostly thanks to Val Kilmer’s captivating portrayal of Doc Holliday. Kevin Costner’s two movies, “Dances With Wolves” and “Open Range” are also outstanding. And, of course, anything with Clint Eastwood.

We only stayed in Tombstone half a day; that was enough. It’s all geared towards separating the tourists from their money. The town’s dirt Main Street wasn’t crowded and there’s plenty of parking. We were there on a weekday. It was enjoyable, memorable, and I’m glad we finally made it there.

I hope you know that if you ever need me “I’m your huckleberry.”

The gam continues …
