Solvang

“To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, to gain all while you give. To roam the roads of lands remote, to travel is to live”. ~ Hans Christian Anderson…

Welcome to Solvang, the Danish Capital of America, a charming town nestled in the Santa Ynez Valley where you can stroll down Copenhagen Drive and admire the old-world European architecture that sets the stage for a delightful shopping experience. You can browse through the charming boutiques and specialty shops, where you’ll find souvenirs, trinkets and other things-you-don’t-necessarily-need to take home. 🇩🇰

You can also satisfy your sweet tooth with authentic Danish pastries at world-renowned bakeries. Indulge in the delectable Aebleskiver and other treats that will transport you to the heart of Denmark. We dined at a small cafe where Treva had what was basically a delicious Belgian waffle with a Banana Split on top. Yes! It was as good as it sounds! 🇩🇰

You can take a break from your shopping and relax in the Hans Christian Andersen Park, a peaceful oasis amidst the town’s vibrant energy or, for a truly immersive experience, hop on a historic wooden streetcar and take a tour of the town. Solvang offers a unique blend of California sunshine and Danish culture, allowing you to indulge in the pleasures of drinking, dining, and shopping like a true Dane without ever leaving the Golden State. 🇩🇰

Solvang, founded in 1911, was established by a group of Danish-American immigrants who purchased 9,000 acres of land in the Santa Ynez Valley. Their mission was to preserve and promote Danish culture, leading to the creation of this settlement called “Solvang,” which means “sunny field” in Danish. Initially, the town focused on farming and maintaining Danish traditions, but it later evolved into this popular tourist destination. The town really became popular after the movie “Sideways” was filmed here. 🇩🇰

Here’s some pictures from our stroll around town…

Upon entering this picturesque village, that was voted “Best Small Town in the West” according to a USA Today Reader’s Poll, we also hit this mileage milestone on our Great American Road Trip…

…and that was on our first visit! We enjoyed Solvang so much we returned a week later for more pictures, more shopping for touristy baubles and, of course, another helping of Banana Split Waffles! 🇩🇰

I hope you get to visit this singular town.

The gam continues…
