The Queen Mary

“My wife will be delighted that you are naming the ship after her” ~ King George V

I didn’t get to go there with her but I thought you might like to see Treva’s recent experience staying on the floating museum/hotel, the Queen Mary.

The RMS Queen Mary, which is twice the gross tonnage of the Titanic, was built in Clydebank, Scotland and launched in 1934. She ran super-liner transatlantic ocean service, along with the RMS Queen Elizabeth, between Southampton and New York until her retirement in 1967 with the advent of jumbo jets.

From Wikipedia: “With the outbreak of World War II, she was converted into a troopship and ferried Allied soldiers during the conflict. On one voyage in 1943, she carried over 16,600 people, setting a record for the most people carried on one vessel at the same time that still stands today.”

“I’m spending the night soaking up some history on this beautiful old ocean liner, the Queen Mary. She is permanently docked in Long Beach, Ca. It has been 90 years since her maiden voyage. It’s really a special ship to see. The RMS Queen Mary officially opened as a floating hotel in 1972, following her retirement from transatlantic service in 1967 and a multi-year renovation by the City of Long Beach, California.”
